Synopsis The Time Travelers ()
Old Ted is telling the kids about how in April of 2013 he and their mother were very close, but far apart. She was dating "some finance guy named Louis" and Ted was alone. Barney wants Ted to go to "Robots vs. Wrestlers: Legends." Elderly wrestlers going against old-timey robots. Barney tells Ted that 20 years from now he'll be glad he went.Marshall, Lily and Robin get to the bar and Marshall announces the invention of his own new drink, a Minnesota Tidal Wave. He insists it isn't a girlie drink, but has Lily go order it for him.
Barney tells Ted that "20-years-from-now Barney" helps him decide whether or not to do something because he does things based on what would make the best memories 20 years from now. Barney asks Ted to close his eyes and when he opens them, 20-years-from-now Barney will appear.
Ted closes his eyes and when Barney tells him to open them, Ted says, "Barney, I swear to God if I open my eyes and your bare ass is an inch away from my face again"
But Ted opens his eyes and sees 20-years-from-now Barney sitting next to him. 20YFN Barney who is wearing a wedding ring introduces a skeptical Ted to 20YFN Ted, who is now sitting across from him in the booth at the bar. Ted is, first and foremost, pleased to see that he doesn't go bald in 20 years. 20YFN Barney doesn't give Barney the same assurance, and Barney goes into a panic.
Lily explains the Minnesota Tidal Wave to the Carl the bartender, saying, "five tablespoons of sugar, a whisper of vanilla vodka and you're done," but Marshall asks her to add "a handful of marichino cherries." The bartender calls it a "Robin Scherbatsky" because she's actually been ordering them so much. Marshall is devastated, but still drinks it when offered a swirly straw.
20YFN Ted tells Ted that Robots vs. Wrestlers is the greatest night of his life, prompting Ted to ask about where his wedding ranks on that list. 20YFN Ted tells him "when I get married, that'll be the greatest night of my life," and goes on to says, "God, I hope I meet her soon." Ted panics, but 20YFN Ted reveals that he's just messing with him, and shows him he's also wearing a wedding ring. Ted agrees to go to Robots vs. Wrestlers. They start to head out but are stopped by a disheveled-looking version of Ted drinking a large cup of coffee, who explains that he's "20-hours-from-now Ted, and you bastards aren't going anywhere."
20HFN Ted is quite hung over and wearing a brace on his left wrist. He says Robots vs. Wrestlers will be awesome at first, but he'll drink too much, hurt himself after entering the ring, and smoke half a pack of cigarettes. 20YFN Barney encourages him to endure one night of pain for a lifetime of memories. Ted says he can go but not drink too much, but is pushed into having to be wasted for the night to go as it should.
"Nobody is saying you need alcohol to have an exciting and memorable night," 20YFN Ted says, and everyone agrees.
"But in this case, yeah, you kind of have to be wasted," 20YFN Barney says, and everyone agrees.
Marshall comes back and reports the news that the drink was named after Robin. She tells him she's sorry, but he says, "So, you're gonna Zuckerberg me?" He tells her he'll see her in court a little court known as the dance floor, and he calls for a dance-off now. Lily tells him not to dance because of his dancer's hip, but Marshall tells her to let him dance his own battles. Robin refuses. She says she just likes having her name on something.
Marshall tells her that's what she'll get, and he emerges from the men's room two minutes later, sipping his drink and carrying a Sharpie behind his ear. He's written her name on the men's room wall with a "for a good time call" message. Robin goes in to find it and Lily tells him he shouldn't have done that. Marshall insists he's "10 steps ahead of her" and has thought of every scenario. Robin emerges from the men's room and heads into the ladies' room. Marshall asks Lily to go see what Robin did for him because he can't go into the ladies' room, but she reminds him he wanted to dance his own battles. He goes in and finds a long "apology" written on the wall by Robin, saying that the reason she let Carl name the drink after her must go back to her childhood, and he continues reading.
Meanwhile, Ted and Barney are off to Robots vs. Wrestlers, but are stopped by 20-minutes-from-now Barney. He has a big red stain on his shirt and Barney makes fun of him for it, saying he looks stupid. Just then, Carl brings Barney a plate of spaghetti and ominously warns Barney to be careful with the meatball. Barney is nervous.
Marshall continues to read Robin's message, which ends with her lamenting how her father never gave her credit for anything and that's why she took credit for the drink. The message ends with, "or maybe I wrote this so you'd be in here long enough for a lady to walk in, causing you to freak out and hide in the stall." That's when a group of ladies walk in and Marshall freaks out and hides in the stall. Behind the door he reads, "GOTCHA!! Love, Robin. (Creator of the Robin Scherbatsky)"
Back in the bar, Carl takes the plate from Barney, who now has a big stain on his shirt, and jokes that he should try to get some in his mouth next time. 20MFN Barney then explains that something big is going to happen in a few seconds and they should watch the door. A woman walks in and he exclaims, "That's why!"
It's the coat-check girl from that dance club they went to seven years ago (Jayma Mays). The night Barney "grind-ed" on his cousin. Ted can't believe she's there. They all encourage him to go talk to her.
In the ladies' room, Marshall uses a Mrs. Doubtfire-like voice from the stall to ask if anyone is there. Hearing nothing, he opens the door and we next see a whole group of women screaming as they run out of the ladies' room. He insists he was tricked and Carl tells him the bar is a place women like to come relax with friends, "maybe have a couple of Robin Scherbatskys and not have to worry about somebody pulling a Marshall Ericksen in the bathroom."
Marshall doesn't like that Carl used his name as shorthand for a guy doing something creepy, and he says Carl has rushed to judgment. He starts to say that the next time he meets a guy who goes around rushing to judgment, "I'm going to say, 'Hey, that guy's being a real Carl" He doesn't know Carl's last name. Carl challenges Marshall to say his last name. Marshall thinks his name might be "Carl Zzzjunior." Ted starts to approach the coat-check girl when he's grabbed and pulled into a booth by two version of 20-months-from-now Coat-Check Girl. There are two versions, because one of them is the one Ted gets together with and is tired of in 20 months, and the other is sick of him. Ted realizes it's doomed completely, regardless of what he does. 20MFN Coat-Check Girl tells him, "You've been dating for a long time, Ted. Has it ever gone any other way?"
Ted is crushed. Robin offers him a Robin Scherbatsky, which only makes Marshall more upset. He says none of this would have happened if Lily had let him dance, but Robin says he would have lost that anyway, "because I'm Sparkles, bitch." Lily goes to the jukebox and puts on Marshall's jam. He calls a dance-off and they go for it.
Ted smiles but tells Barney he's going to head home. Barney doesn't try to stop him and asks Ted how he'd even try to do that. Ted says Barney would tell him "life is short and if you ever come across a beautiful, exciting, crazy moment, you've got to seize it while you can before that moment's gone."
Barney explains to Ted that the moment already is gone. He says the whole Minnesota Tidal Wave thing happened five years, "it's just a memory, and the rest of this never happened." He tells Ted that at that moment, Marshall and Lily are actually upstairs trying to get Marvin to go back to sleep, and he is with Robin trying to decide on a caterer, "and you've been sitting here all night staring at a single ticket to Robots. vs. Wrestlers because the rest of us couldn't come out."
"Look around, Ted," Barney says. "You're all alone."
Old Ted explains to the kids that it's been almost 20 years since that night in April 2013, and if he could go back in time and relive that night, "there's no way in hell I'd go to Robots vs. Wrestlers.
He says he'd go home and see his old apartment, his old drafting table, his old couch, and he'd go to Lily and Marshall's place to be back in "that old living room where so many things happened."
"I'd see the baby," he says, as we see him lifting up Marvin. "I don't know if you can picture me holding your 6-foot-7 cousin Marvin over my head, but back then I could."
He says he'd go have a drink with Barney and Robin and watch them fight about their caterer, "or whatever it was they were fighting about that night."
"But none of those things was the thing I'd do first," he says. "You know the thing I'd do first."
We see Ted running in the alternate version of what actually happened around the corner of 115th Street, where his would-be wife was living. He runs up to her place and knocks on the door.
"Hi," he says. "I'm Ted Mosby, and exactly 45 days from now, you and I are going to meet, and we're going to fall in love and we're going to get married and we're going to have two kids, and we're going to love them and each other so much. All that is 45 days away, but I'm here now, I guess, because I want those extra 45 days with you, I want each one of them. If I can't have them, I'll take the extra 45 seconds before your boyfriend walks up and punches me in the face. Because I love you, I'm always going to love you, 'til the end of my days and beyond. You'll see."
That's when Louis walks up. Ted explains that he's in love with Louis' girlfriend and they're going to get married.
"What?" Louis says, just before punching Ted in the face.
But we see Ted, in the real April 2013, just turn and walk away from the bar.
